List Poem: Drenched
As I walk to track,
It starts to sprinkle.
I feel it on
My wrinkled shirt.
I change inside,
Go back out,
And then it starts
To pour.
Puddles wet my sneakers,
Rain falls even harder, as
Storm drains
Overflow.
We don’t stretch,
We go to the
Locker room.
I can hear
The steady drum
Of rain
On the roof.
My socks are severely soaked,
My shirt saturated,
My shorts drenched,
My shoes waterlogged.
I use the dryers
On my clothes.
I try to call my mom,
To pick me up,
But my phone is
Out of charge.
I wait in the lobby,
For her.
I walk
To the car.
Squish, squish, squish.
When I get home,
I put newspaper
In my shoes,
To soak up the water.
That day, track was
Torture.
The poetic elements I used were alliteration, onomatopoeia, auditory imagery and visual imagery.
I used the alliteration “my socks are severely soaked” to show how wet my socks were. They could be wrung out like a washcloth.
I used the onomatopoeia “squish” to describe how much water was in my shoes. There were very deep puddles, which overflowed into my shoes. They made a squish sound when I walked.
I used the auditory imagery “the steady drum of rain on the roof” to describe the loud sound the rain made. I think it really helped to prove to the reader that the rain was so loud that it could be heard through the thick roof of the school.
