Picture Poem: The Deep Blue Sea
The sea glimmers,
Like the eyes
Of a baby.
The water
Has many different
Shades.
Blues,
Greens,
Blacks,
All shining
Under
The yellow afternoon
Sun.
The shore has
A beach
Without a soul
About it.
The light tan
Blends with the
Brown
Of the rocky hills.
Trees
Grow abundantly
On the hills.
They are a net
For the rocks,
Keeping them
In place.
All paint
A beautiful picture
In my mind.
The poetic elements I used were simile, visual imagery and metaphor.
I used the simile “the sea glimmers like the eyes of a baby” to describe how bright and shiny the ocean was. I think it made it easy for the reader to envision the water.
I used the visual imagery “blues, greens, blacks, all shining under the yellow afternoon sun” to detail the many colors of the water. It had the same purpose as the simile: to make it easy for the reader to envision the water.
Finally, I used the metaphor “they are a net for the rocks, keeping them in place” to express what the trees looked like on the ridge. They encompassed the ridge and held the loose rocks in place.
Like the eyes
Of a baby.
The water
Has many different
Shades.
Blues,
Greens,
Blacks,
All shining
Under
The yellow afternoon
Sun.
The shore has
A beach
Without a soul
About it.
The light tan
Blends with the
Brown
Of the rocky hills.
Trees
Grow abundantly
On the hills.
They are a net
For the rocks,
Keeping them
In place.
All paint
