Poetic Terms Glossary-Poetic Elements
Imagery- figurative language used to represent an image.
Visual Imagery*- to imagine something tangible.
Auditory Imagery*- to imagine someting that makes noise.
Olfactory Imagery*- to imagine something that has a smell.
Gustatory Imagery- to imagine something that has a taste and can be eaten.
Tactile Imagery- the imagining of something that can be touched.
Organic Imagery- imagining something related to living organisms.
Kinesthetic Imagery*- the imagining of something that can be felt.
Figurative Language- language using figures of speech; cannot be taken literally.
Metaphor*- a comparison of two things unlike with some similar characteristics.
Similie*- compares unlike things using like or as.
Personification*- giving the qualities of a human to sometning non-human.
Hyporbole- a figure of speech where the truth is stretches to make it funny.
Antithesis- when two contrasting ideas are compared to create balance.
Symbol- something that has a meaning further than just itself.
Allusion*- the reference to a famous person, place or event.
-Common allusions: Biblical, historical, literary.
Connotation- symbolic "baggage" attached to a word, significant, rich in imagery...the deeper meaning.
Denotation- actual definition...think dictionary
Melodic Devices- give rhythmic, metered patterns to poetry. Incorporating melodic devices gives the poetry a desired tone, making word selection vital.
Assonance- vowel sounds are repeated in words that don't rhyme.
Alliteration*- the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
Consonance- consonant sounds are repeated at the end of words.
Onomatopoeia*- words that are spelled like the sound they make.
-Example: buzz, whoosh,woof, gargle, etc.
Cacophony- harsh sounds used for a poetic affect.
Euphony- a pleasing sound in speech.
